For marine technology used in the polar zones, will develop some increased requirements. The agreement on cooperation in the development of such GOST was concluded by shipbuilders and polar explorers following the results of the panel discussion of Rosstandart “Accessible Arctic: standards, safety, environmental friendliness”. The meeting was held on April 10, 2019 as part of the V International Arctic Forum.
Technical standards committees “Shipbuilding” (TC 005) and “Research in the Polar Regions” (TC 187) will be engaged in joint work on standards. The document was signed by the chairmen of the technical committees, the general director of the Krylov State Research Center, P Abel Filippov, and the director of the ANO Polar Initiative, Nikita Kuprikov. The key objective of the agreement is the development and implementation of progressive standards in the design, construction and operation of marine equipment in the polar zones.
“The arctic regions of our country need a variety of vessels: one of them needs large icebreakers and merchant ships, in the other, many small vessels to transport people or conduct business. Working with polar experts will accurately determine the needs of a particular region and help businesses and people in these territories make life and work in the Arctic as comfortable as possible, ” said Pavel Filippov.
Experts from government, business and science will jointly form long-term programs and work plans for national and interstate standardization. Existing GOSTs will be examined for relevance to use in the polar zones, and the ones being developed will be publicly discussed by the industry community.
“Extremely low temperatures and the lack of a developed infrastructure in the polar regions place severe demands on the maneuverability and endurance of marine equipment. At the same time today we can not ignore the environmental aspect of our activities. Therefore, mastering a new region for us, we will, at the first stage, lay down high requirements for the environmental friendliness of marine technology in order to preserve the nature of the Arctic, and not correct mistakes after years, ”said Nikita Kuprikov.
